about
This allegorical folk track explores the relationship between artist and muse, hero and fan, sympathising with each, while at the same time condemning both. The release marks a farewell to Madeleine Duke's folk beginnings, as she takes her sound in a new direction.
lyrics
I was a young man with a pocket full of fame
Wasn't very talented, but people knew my name
Carried with me everywhere a horse of whittled wood
And when I would doubt myself she'd say "but you're so good!"
Fortune took me places that I'd otherwise not go
And where I travelled I had fans at every show
But I got so worried, how I filled my head with shame
I felt like a joke, it's just that people knew my name
She'd say welcome words to me like "luck favours the brave"
She thought I deserved all the awards and accolades
If I ever faltered I would reach for that dear mare
Hold her in my hand and know that she'd always be there
Kept her on my person through the nighttime and the day
And I never lost her and she never ran away
As fate would have it all the glory that I'd known
Dwindled and soon left me feeling sorry and alone
"For what is my worth now?" I wept to empty rooms
Nobody loves me, no-one wants to hear my tunes
Felt a little tug upon the fraying of my jeans
She looked up adoringly, uncertain on her feet
"I still want to hear you play," she begged with beaming eyes
I said something nastily, to see if she would cry
"Go from me little horse!" I couldn't meet her gaze
I'd never been worthy of such unwavering praise
"Take me off my pedestal and see me as I am"
Love-sick, she just swore that she was still my greatest fan
Took her from my pocket and I gave her to a child
Said that I'd just carved her from a pine tree growing wild
"What shall l call her? Have you named her something sweet?"
"Call her what you will," I said, "for she is yours to keep"
Though she always had my back and loved me like a son
I'd kept her on my person and it can't have been much fun
Never had occurred to me to give her her own name
Though I never lost her and she never ran away
i'm a sometimes-fink, and this is a beautiful album i was lucky to be involved with! i sing on "nobody writes to the colonel", "weirdo's walk" and "yr mother's dresser" Madeleine Duke
